What percentage of California shark attacks is fatal?

This question specifically seems to be one of the most common ones for surfers in California

I polled a group of people close to me that surf all over the coast and the issue of fatality rate was one of the most common ones. The data revealing that overall shark encounters in California have a 93% survival rate seems to be one of the only reassuring points of this project.

But let’s add some more spice: according to sharkstewards.com “Over 80% of recorded shark fatalities along the west coast are north of Point Conception (Santa Barbara).”
