How does California compare to other high risk places in the world?

This plot confirms that California is among the most dangerous places on the planet.

After confirming that the U.S. experiences the most recorded shark incidents with Florida seeing the majority, I separated California data out to compare against the other most dangerous places on the planet.

This chart helped me put into perspective how concerned California surfers should be over encountering sharks vs other surfing-centric places such as Australia and South Africa.

Fun facts:

  • Australia has nearly the same population as California, but has over 2x the rate of shark attacks.

  • South Africa’s population is almost the total of Australia’s and California’s combined.
