Which states in the U.S. have the most encounters?

Florida has more recorded shark attacks than the rest of the U.S. combined (924 vs 850.) This should make Florida surfers sleep better at night.

This map illustrates how shark incidents in different states compare to each other. While California places a distant second to Florida, it’s interesting to see that Florida has almost 4x as many recorded incidents as California does.

A quick note on Hawaii being not too far behind California: in 2021 Hawaii had a population of 1.4 million people vs California at 39 million people. The fact that Hawaii is only behind California by 24 incidents is alarming in it’s own right…
