Southern California appears to have a broader season of shark encounters than the
Northern part of the state.
Shark encounters in Southern California tend to pick up in May and taper off near the end of October. Meanwhile, Northern California sees an increase around August that lasts through December. Again, this could very well be due to the migration habits of the white shark population.
The most dangerous time of the year to be in the water in the entire state of California is in the Northern part of the state on Saturdays throughout the month of September.
